Advertising By Force

by Kevin Nunley

The results are in: buttons, banners, skyscrapers, big boxes-- none of them can compare to the success rate of Static GIF and Flash Pop-unders.

Any Net user is familiar with the X10 spy cameras.

Why?

Because, there is no where to run and no where to hide. Those pop-under ads will get you no matter where you go.

Although these ads may annoy you to no end, X10 has an important lesson to teach you about advertising on the web.

When marketing to a mass audience, and the net definitely has a mass audience, TV-like ads which are intrusive and even unavoidable seem to work the best.

For one thing, you can't help but see them. Like a television commercial, they come between you and what you really want to see.

Viewers are forced to take notice of pop-unders at least long enough to close them.

Pop-unders are also useful to employ on your own site. If you have something in particular you want your visitor to see, put it right in their face.

So what is the lesson here?

Intrusive, annoying advertising can be effective, but should be used sparingly to avoid alienating viewers completely.
