AN EZINE TO DIE FOR!

by Marie Williams

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS! Everyone wants to know the secret behind a successful newsletter. I get asked so many times "What is the one thing that will keep my readers begging for more?"

PERFECT MIX. The answer is crystal clear: what makes an ezine work is never down to one single thing. The right formula comes from a blend of ingredients that all work well together.

MAIN COURSE. One essential ingredient is coming up with bankable ideas - time and time again. How do you expect to stand out in this ever-expanding ezine world if you don't offer something new, something different? Here's how you *will* create explosive ideas to sky-rocket your ezine to success!

CHOOSE YOUR MENU. Get to know how your own creative process works. Remember that your mind is unique. It "flavors" the whole of your ezine, from format to presentation to content, with something special that only you can add. This means that you (and you alone) have complete control over making that perfect recipe.

GET TASTING! Just as no one ever learns how to be a great cook by studying the same old recipe book, you can't expect your ezine to take off without expanding your knowledge base.

NEW RECIPES. Ideas can come from anywhere and everywhere. How about looking at your bookshelf? A title can spark off your imagination instantly. For example, I have a book on letter writing. What if I wrote my ezine as a series of letters between two struggling epublishers? This could make for a witty and unique scenario. What's on your shelf? And how might it help you?

EXPERIMENT. Keep asking yourself 'What If?' type questions. Great cooking comes through testing, tasting, and re-testing. What if, for example, you come up with a new approach to a Q and A column? One magazine that I read has done this by posing imaginary questions from celebrities. The unique little twist comes as the stars ask everyday questions like "How do I make my butt look smaller?" It's fun and it works!

ADD A NEAT TWIST. Hardly anyone is able to come up with a completely new idea. Learn how to borrow ideas and adapt them to suit your publication. What ideas are other publishers using that you like? How can you change these ideas so that they're unique to you?

BAKE TO NEAR-PERFECTION. If you're like me, you'll fast be getting more ideas than you can possibly handle. Learn to be selective - and also a little realistic about what you can achieve. Nothing is ever perfect. But you can sure cook up an ezine to die for!
